The Thinker
I always wanted to write a “think piece”.
When do you do your best thinking? Where do you do your best thinking? Have you ever thought about it?
Some people like to get a head start at writing by writing in their head. Thinking it through before putting it down in words. Outlining things in your head before you write them down is a great way to get organized.
For some people writing comes natural. The words and ideas flow naturally. For some it is like pulling teeth…
Do you have a writing process? I like to keep a list of thoughts and ideas for future writing. I usually work on multiple pieces at the same time. Substack makes this easy.
Do you know the end before writing the beginning? Sometimes I like to surprise myself. I did that when I wrote that IRS story. I didn't know how it would end until it did.
Some are driven to write. It is something that they have to do. It can be an obsession.
When writing, are you inspired? Are you inspiring?
Some treat writing like a job. Complete with “office hours”. For some it is a career. Is your purpose for writing to make money? Or, to create new worlds for others to explore… Both?
Writing can be easy or hard work depending on how you approach it. Do you enjoy writing or is it a chore like mopping the floor?
For me writing is just a hobby. A creative outlet.
Editing? That usually requires more thinking.
When do you do your best thinking?
In the early morning quiet hours?
While exercising or doing housework?
While sniffing glue?
While driving or during a commute?
While in bed at end of the day or late at night?
In the shower?
Outside in nature?
Walking the dog?
Sitting on the toilet?
Sitting on a dock in the bay watching the tide roll away?
I do my best thinking early in the morning when I first wake up. I lay there and pet my dog before I even get up and make coffee. It is a nacent dream-like state. Relaxed. Sleepy. Warm. Cozy. My imagination has free reign. It is the best time of the day.
Then I must have coffee….

I get my best ideas (or used to) in the shower.
Now I don't want to think anymore...or dream....too much trauma these past years.
I'm a spectator, the writers of Substack never fail to make my time here a pleasure and an education.
Perhaps one day I might write something. My 'thinking time' is when I'm walking or doing some bland task.
